Unlucky in Lockdown

cover of Unlucky in Lockdown by Julianne Benford

Cora and Xandra have been flatmates for over a year, but they’ve never been friends. It’s not been a problem before – Cora likes her peace and quiet, and Xandra’s happy to leave her to it, spending most of her time partying elsewhere. But when the COVID-19 pandemic takes hold, and the UK is put under lockdown, they find themselves forced into spending a lot more time together. Will they put their differences aside and learn to tolerate each other’s company? Will familiarity breed further contempt…or will they find common ground and develop a true friendship?

Unlucky in Lockdown is a 26,750 word novella set during the first two weeks of the UK’s lockdown. I self-published it in August of that same year, knowing it would have a limited audience, as most people at the time were quite open that they were looking for escapism! Still, I wanted to tell this story in order to help those who wanted it feel less alone, and to explore some of the difficult feelings that many of us had to deal with. I was pleasantly surprised by the small but enthusiastic readership that it found – exactly the people I hoped to reach.

Better Than Dreams

Better Than Dreams started out as a book blog called This Fleeting Dream, on which I mostly posted reviews of books that I’d borrowed from the library. After a few years I was lucky enough to be on the lists for a number of publishers, and I got to read many amazing books and attend exciting events with authors and other publishing people.

Through this blog I met the other co-founders of Bookish Brits, a collaborative YouTube channel, and then I went on to start my own channel, Better Than Dreams. After a couple of years running Better Than Dreams I decided I preferred that name and renamed This Fleeting Dream to match!

Now those YouTube videos are mostly archived, as I decided in 2023, after a couple of years hiatus, to relaunch my channel to document my TBR zero project.

This Second’s Obsession

This Second’s Obsession began life as a fashion blog back in 2006 when I was an undergraduate student. I didn’t have internet in my house so I used to spend my evenings in the college library, visiting my favourite blogs, saving their latest posts on a USB stick to read the next day at home, and posting on TSO. I used to write all my blog posts in Notepad during the day, and save them on a USB stick to upload at night!

In its later years it became a lifestyle blog, before I decided to pause updating it in 2022. It’s now an archive of book reviews and fashion thoughts from my 20s.
